Abstract
In the context of the rapid spread of digital technologies and visual media, the topic of perception of human attractiveness is becoming especially relevant. This study analyzes the impact of digital filters using AI technologies on the perception of attractiveness and self-esteem of users. Based on a theoretical review and an experimental study involving Russian respondents, the effects of using filters of varying intensity (from minimal to pronounced) to evaluate portraits according to the parameters of attractiveness, naturalness, and trustworthiness were studied. Participants rated 60 images and completed a self-assessment survey twice — before and after interacting with visual stimuli. The results showed that retouching affects the perception of faces, enhancing their attractiveness with moderate processing, but causing rejection with excessive correction. Moderate retouching turned out to be optimal for female faces, while for men even pronounced processing sometimes increased ratings, which indicates gender differences in beauty standards. However, the use of filters does not have a significant effect on self-esteem. The work raises questions about the ethics of using digital filters, media beauty standards and their impact on the psychological state of the audience. The findings of the study can be used to develop recommendations on media literacy and responsible visual content, as well as to plan further interdisciplinary research in this area.
