Augmented Reality Art (AR Art) and Contemporary Digital Culture

X. Guo

Abstract

Augmented reality art, or AR art, is a contemporary form of media technology that is currently attracting widespread attention from audiences worldwide. Its distinctive feature is that artists, drawing on the latest scientific and technological advances, can create and use digital objects, integrating them into the surrounding environment. Today, AR art is one of the fastest-growing and most popular creative fields, having become part of public art in modern urban spaces. Natural landscapes, as well as environmental themes, are also quite popular. Unlike virtual reality art (VR art), AR art is a combination of reality and virtuality. Artists working in this field often address themes of reimagining the environment. Some believe this is necessary due to the so-called crisis of “disillusionment” that is manifesting itself in traditional local cultural spaces. In the modern world, their unique historical context is being lost, so AR art brings them back into the present, creating a new “practical aesthetic.” At the same time, with the emergence of modern trends such as AR art, many ethical questions also become relevant.
