COMMERCIALLY VIABLE PROJECT «ANTON CHEKHOV»

Abstract
The article is devoted to actual issues of publishing Anton Chekhovʼs works in a for-profit publishing house. The author uses the example of St. Petersburg «Azbooka» experience in order to demonstrate the strategies of widening the list of prominent author's works and the scope of his readers. From 2004 up to the present moment, this publishing house has published 14 collections of Chekhovʼs works, compiled according the thematic principle. Readersʼ reviews testify that ACADEMIA: А.С. Степанова 85 the audience of these books is not homogeneous, different readers have different expectations while buying a book, and have different impressions after reading it. The analysis of their reviews and the results of sales allow the author to make some conclusions about Chekhov's image of modern readers and their demands for his works.
