The article is devoted to the question that significant objects of everyday life affect the structure of an individual's consciousness. Among the most important such objects in the last century can be attributed to the car. This is a technical thing that complements the human body and expands its capabilities. It is possible to distinguish the stages of manifestation of the influence of the image of the car on the identification of a person. The first stage is the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. He initially assumed an intensive growth in production and the mass nature of the production of cars. Also, questions are immediately raised about the influence of the machine on the world and the person in it. First of all, these are problems of space and time. But they are complemented by questions about ethics, as well as a fundamental consideration of technology in this period from the position of "evil". Or at least threats. This is followed by the period between the world Wars, when personal transport becomes part of the idea of the exceptional, as opposed to the collective. Here the car causes an ambivalent reaction. He is still thought of as a threat. At the same time, it is increasingly associated with freedom and elitism. At the same time, the growth in the number of personal cars requires the modernization of urban space. The improvement of the city's infrastructure is accompanied by the introduction of new traffic rules. They also require additional equipment for cars with equipment that allows the driver to provide a more complex system of signals. And this, in turn, changes the structure of perception of reality, first of the driver, and then of all road users. Then comes the post-war period, when the car acts as the basis of faith in the future and in the irreversibility of progress. But the changes, both for the technical equipment of the car and for the structure of the consciousness of the motorist continue. They include both positive aspects, for example, an improved security system, and negative ones, for example, bringing to life such a phenomenon as an autocide. Finally, modernity builds a rather complex relationship with this thing, which largely orients the identification practice of an individual. Car varieties are growing, assuming different human needs in different situations. Nevertheless, they are mainly associated with the embodiment of the idea of autonomy of life. This, along with other circumstances, requires the addition of "smart things" in the use of the car. A number of problematic issues in the perception of the car remain from the appearance of the car to this day. At the same time, new problem areas in the perception of the car are being formed today, related to such phenomena as carsharing, autopiloting, etc.
