The symbol in the aspect of intertextuality
Abstract
The article offers a semiotic analysis of the symbol as a phenomenon of intertextuality. The symbol is understood as a mechanism of memory and translation of cultural meanings. The article analyzes two main categories — symbols in art and religion. The author also refers to archaic symbolism, showing its procedural nature and its transformation of consciousness. The idea contained in the symbol is not given directly. It is a semantic construction of a collapsed narrative, a kind of semantic capsule. The author suggests considering the symbol as a text with the properties of intertextuality. The symbol structure is a synthesis of texts pointing at each other. The author shows exactly how intertextuality forms the multilevel semantics of a symbol, as well as provides variability in contextual representation. The immanent binary of the symbol includes plots about phenomena opposite in sign, their interaction, struggle and removal on a metaphysical level. Consideration of the symbol in this aspect has not yet become widespread in the scientific literature. It seems that this approach will allow us to develop the analysis of the symbolic, both at the general theoretical and applied levels.
