Alves B. Consonance and dissonance in visual music

A. N. Lipov, B. Alves

Abstract

Translation of article from English.

The concepts of consonance and dissonance, broadly defined, can serve as structural models for visual music makers. The use of words such as “harmony” in both music and the visual arts points to potential correspondences not only between sensory elements such as pitch and color, but also with the manipulation of tension and resolution, anticipation and stability in visual music. The concepts of harmony have a long history of the proportions of space, color and movement, and music that artists can now use with new technologies. In this publication, which is a translation of a scholarly article from English, the author offers examples from his own work as well as an analysis of the techniques of visual artists such as Oscar Fischinger and John Whitney.
