Local Souls in Global Games: Vietnamese Developers and the Quest for Cultural Identity
Abstract
This paper examines how Vietnamese video game projects negotiate cultural identity through the incorporation of traditional and historical elements, focusing on two recent case studies: the ambitious but ultimately cancelled war-themed project 300475 and the indie horror game Thần Trùng. While both projects aimed to embed Vietnamese cultural resources—historical memory in the former and folk spiritual beliefs in the latter, their trajectories reveal the opportunities and constraints facing Vietnam’s emerging game industry. Drawing on cultural studies and game localization theory, the paper argues that these projects illustrate the ambivalent dynamics of identity formation in digital media. Thần Trùng achieved modest success by reinforcing cultural identity through local aesthetics, familiar environments, and spiritual motifs, yet its narrative depth was limited by the lack of systematic cultural research. 300475, by contrast, highlighted the challenges of financing, human resources, and market scale when attempting to commercialize national history in game form, ultimately failing to secure sufficient community funding. By situating these cases within broader debates on globalization, cultural hybridization, and creative industries in the Global South, this paper contributes to understanding the fragile balance between cultural authenticity and commercial viability in Vietnamese game development. It argues that while games offer a promising arena for cultural identity reinforcement, structural constraints and limited cultural capital often lead to hybridized or commodified outcomes.
