Translators` professional education and work from the culturological prospective
Abstract
This article reviews how the cultural approach can be applied in the studies, dedicated to translators` or interpreters` professional activity. Culture is the core concept for this methodology. Its main principle, subjectivity of cultural development, is also noted. It implies that individuals are following certain behavioral strategies, which they choose by themselves despite the fact that their social environment and culture have a significant influence on them. Thus, according to the cultural approach, a person is characterized by an active manifestation. The main aspects of this methodology are mentioned – axiological, technological, and personal-creative. The first one includes indicators by which individual's activity is assessed. Technological one reflects understanding of culture as a specific form of activity, connection between labor and culture. The last, personal-creative aspect, connects two more concepts – personality and culture. Principle of cultural conformity is mentioned, it is relevant in education field. Higher education institutions are characterized by the following aspects – cultural continuity, cultures interconnectedness (professional, corporate, organizational, personal), professional values inclusion into university cultural space. These components are important because by following them it possible to build such educational process that will result in the development of both basic and cultural competencies, incorporating a future specialist into professional culture. The process of becoming a cultural subject is considered, it starts with mastering the basics of culture and its language, and leads to assimilation. Socio-professional competence is evaluated, basic translating skills are revealed. This specialist forms his linguistic personality depending on cultural system, society, history and personal preferences. It becomes his distinctive characteristic and reflects his unique style and choice of certain translation strategies and methods. This is especially relevant for such translation types where adaptation is necessary, due to the fact that audience differs in socio-cultural, geographical aspects, age, etc. Translation transformations at various levels, from verbal-semantic to motivational, reveal translator` creativity. Concepts of professional and organizational cultures are also mentioned.
