Image-patterns of space and movement in music

Abstract


The purpose of this study is to study the frequency and characterization of the use of spatial metaphors and metaphors of movement in relation to music in the Russian language, as well as to identify the basis of these metaphors. Based on the work of Lakoff and Johnson, as well as empirical research, we have demonstrated that the image-schema approach has the best explanatory power, as well as the most relevant structure. The experiences of music are based on image-schemes, which are a Source Sphere for the conceptualization of music and musical images. In turn, music transposes frames of experiences of space and movement from the spatial Spheres of the source. Image-patterns of movement: source-path-goal and impulse are involved in many perceptions of music. Music is a series of alternating sounds, in the strict sense, it is just a substitution, and the dynamic aspects that are expressed in a metaphorical sense are the result of illusory perceptions.
