Abstract
This article analyzes the processes associated with the development of the national melodic style in contemporary academic works for the viola in the People's Republic of China. The study examines the unique phenomenon of the "Sinicization" of the European viola, wherein this instrument of the Western symphony orchestra becomes a carrier of profound philosophical content and Chinese national identity. Particular attention is paid to the organic synthesis of the traditional modal system of the Middle Kingdom – pentatonics – and European performance technique. The article highlights the key stages in the formation and development of the Chinese academic school, ranging from the early 20th-century experiments involving the fusion of Western compositional techniques with national melodic motifs to the contemporary avant-garde experiments of the "New Wave" composers. The work focuses on the creative styles and compositions of the most prominent representatives of contemporary Chinese music who have written for the viola: Tan Dun, Chen Yi, and Li Zili. It explores how their works interpret the traditions of Peking Opera and various regional operas, as well as the specific performance techniques of traditional Chinese instruments – such as the pipa, guqin, and erhu – and how these are adapted for the viola. The study examines technical performance principles present in Chinese viola repertoire, including microchromatics, "pitch-bending" (a technique where one note transitions smoothly and gradually into another to create a specific expressive effect), unique vibrato, and specific articulation that emulates the vocal nature of Eastern melos. A significant contribution of this work is the explanation of the aesthetic concept of "Yun," which serves as the foundation of the "spiritualized" sound in the Chinese musical tradition. The influence of regional opera styles (Henan, Sichuan, Cantonese) on the development of the intonational structure of modern Chinese viola works is also analyzed. The author posits that the interpretation of national style in the academic repertoire of the PRC is not merely a technical task, but a complex process that transforms the viola into an instrument with expansive expressive possibilities aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue between East and West. The article concludes that the modern viola school of the PRC is a dynamically evolving system capable of enriching the global musical landscape with new timbral colors and fresh conceptual ideas.
