On the example of historical descriptions of St. Petersburg creation of an image of the city, the beginning of formation of steady representations about the new capital of Russia is considered. The author offers to discussion a problem of origin of steady negative and positive concepts of an assessment of the importance of the city in the history of the state, in the history of culture which arose at contemporaries on the basis of public publications
