GEORGE OF TREBIZOND’S APOCALYPTISM AS A STRATEGY FOR MARGINALIZATION OF THE PLATONIC HERITAGE

M. V. Semikolennykh/М. В. Семиколенных

Abstract

In his Comparatio Philosophorum Aristotelis et Platonis George of Trebizond sought not so much to compare philosophical views of ancient thinkers as to demonstrate falsity and harmfulness of Plato’s teaching and the opinions of his followers. He employed popular eschatological imagery (first of all, identification of famous Platonists with false prophets and Antichrist himself) as one of the means to this end.
